It’s the kind of game you can (and will want to) play again and again because the fun of the game arises from what other players are doing and not from puzzling out a way to optimize your route through mechanical constraints. It’s a Euro game and follows a lot of Euro game staples with its mechanics, and its theme – trading in the Mediterranean. The dynasty that becomes the most impressive as well as pleasing the Gods will gain the most VP and be crowned the winner.

It’s also important to be able to look at the map and see what cities have houses in them, where the colonists are, and the cost to build a new house in a given city. It’s never a matter of “how will I ever manage to build in every province” but “how can I build on one more province”? The game has variable setup, but it’s really the player interaction that makes the game different each time you play. This is one of those games where, just shifting the map a bit, changes so much of how you approach the game. For each card of a certain god you have, you’ll multiply that score by one – it might be cities built, colonists placed, zones settled etc.You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Combining scoring and engine building so tightly can’t be an easy design task to pull off, but I think Mac Gerdts might have done something truly special here.

Although Concordia feels like it is from 2003, it was actually published just five years ago, in 2013. In fact, that’s what put me off trying this one in the first place, despite its being nominated for the Kennerspiel des Jahres in 2014.The end game is triggered when a player places their last house on the board, or the last personality card is purchased. So you not only have to have an eye on what cards you need; you also need to make sure no other player achieves a monopoly on any of the scoring conditions, because each additional god in your hand is a multiplier at the end of the game. Your aim is to use these resources and action cards to spread your colonists across the map, leaving settlements along the way.
