Anabel and Volo agree that Cal and Evangeline will marry. Evangeline is heartbroken and livid.Though this may be simple and small, I have to say it. Victoria is not good with naming people, cities, and countries. There's a map in the book and the name of the cities are not good. Like Victoria just jumbled up some words to make them seem like a fantasy name and went with it. Nevermind that some names are lazy. Once again, Evangeline forces Mare and Maven together. Mare learns from Maven that his mother, Elara Merandus, masterfully manipulated mind, starting from childhood. Maven reveals that even now he isn't sure where her unnatural influence leaves off and his own will begins. He tells her about the close friend he once had named Thomas, whom he loved. He was at the war front when he lost control of his burner abilities and accidentally killed Thomas. He asked his mother to take away his pain. She was never fully able to do so, only distort it. And that revelation was not the result of Victoria Aveyard's efforts to twist his character to make readers love him less, like I believed at first. Don't get me wrong, he's still my favorite character, but I'm afraid I idolised him. The bitter truth is that he is not good at making decisions, like Maven, and Mare and Cameron and everyone else knew from the start. He is noble, and kind, and a great strategist, he loves Mare despite reason in a way that warms you up inside, but he has his weaknesses.

The romance between this sweet yet insufferable young man and our dearest Mare melted my heart. The mutual support, the understanding, the goofiness, the sexiness, the courage to break stereotypes... ALL OF IT is just wonderful. *sigh* Evangeline: The older, posher Mare but with SURPRISE SHE'S GAY twist. This came out of the blue. It honestly feels like Aveyard threw the twist in because she needed to fill her LGBT+ quota. I gave this book 2*. I won't lie the first half was enjoyable. The sarcasm was on point and I loved the whole weird feelings and relationship between Mare and Maven. It was interesting and reminded me so much of Unravel Me that it just broke my heart. The Training Montage: After nudging from Kilorn, who has been helping ease tensions between Reds and Newbloods, Mare agrees to start learning how to use her ability. She trains with three Newbloods who have the same ability— Ella, Rafe and Tyton—and learns that it has a name: Electricon.

First of all, I CALLED IT. I KNEW that we'd be getting lots of Maven and seeing the boy behind the villain's mask in this one. And PRAISE THE BOOK GODS, I'm so glad Victoria didn't let me down. She gave us all those moments we hoped for, the explanation, the moments of fragility, the tension, everything... She gave me a beautiful, tragic, tormented villain who fell in love with the wrong girl. Considering the fact Mare is in captivity for almost the entire book you’d really think that it would be boring to read about her experiences. But NO! There definitely was nothing boring about her situation and even though there is no fast-paced action like in the second instalment you still have to remind yourself to breathe. I’m sure now you’re asking yourself why anyone would stop to breathe while they are reading a book and the answer is simple: The intensity of King’s Cage literally chokes you! It takes away your breath and leaves you gasping for air and it gives you all the pleasant shivers you’ve been craving for but never realised you wanted to feel! XD The atmosphere of this book is just breath-taking and sometimes I was forced to stop reading because I found myself unable to deal with another chapter. (Yes, the book was that good!!!) The conversations between Maven and Mare were nothing but awesome (the breakfast and the bathroom scene before the wedding! OMG the bathroom scene killed me!!!) and I definitely want more of them! So please Victoria let them meet again, let them be at each other’s throat and speak the bitter truth! They are equals in every possible way and I want them to finish what they’ve begun! XD God, I so can’t wait to read the fourth book! Evangeline uses Mare to disrupt Maven. They all know that Mare is his weakness. But Maven still marries Iris. After the wedding, a storm cloud gathers. It is another newblood with Mare’s own ability, and she comes with the Scarlet Guard. Evangeline helps Mare get away and frees her power. In exchange Mare promises not to kill Evangeline’s brother. Mare has turned herself in to Maven in exchange for the lives of her friends. King Maven held to his end of the bargain and did not pursue them. Now he holds Mare prisoner and televises her capture. He makes her out to be a leader of the Scarlet Guard. He forces her to kneel in front of him while he attaches a gold collar and leash to her. Many citizens of Norta believe Maven's lies, but some Silvers are against Maven and his tactics. Cameron, a newblood who is able to silence other’s powers, is with the Scarlet Guard division that is led by Farley. They are in the tunnels of Isabelle, a Scarlet Guard stronghold near a city called Trial. She only wishes to save her brother but finds herself with the somewhat fractured guard. Cal can’t seem to find his place, and most of the reds don’t trust him. Cameron certainly doesn’t trust any of the Silvers among them. Including Cal. Cal is busy trying to save as many Silver lives as possible, a sentiment that Cameron doesn’t share. She follows him to a secret room and suspects him of communicating with someone on the outside though she doesn’t know who.

During the following battle Mare and Cal are reunited but the Mind Whisperer, Samson, forces them to fight each other. Finally, they kill Samson and get away.
